Residents plead for flood relief

Members of Calgary’s Pakistani community made a plea for donations yesterday to help their country recover from a devastating flood.

Their request comes after the federal government’s announcement to match all money donated by Canadians.

“Please help and assist us in this moment of need,” said Muhammad Rasheed of Calgary’s Pakistan Canada Association during a press conference.

Calgary East MP Deepak Obhrai said it’s vital for Calgarians to donate whatever they can.

“We will ensure that those dollars that Canadians do donate go to where they are supposed to go,” said Obhrai, adding the government is working with reputable agencies.

With several family members in Pakistan, Hameed Quershi said he has heard first-hand accounts of the situation.

“(The water) was like roof level. All the houses, everything have all been destroyed,” said Quershi, adding most of his wife’s family has been left homeless.

Those wishing to help can donate to organizations like the Red Cross, International Development and Relief Foundation or Human Concern International.
