It’s been one month since an earthquake devastated the people of Haiti. But Edmontonians refuse to give up the opportunity to continue giving.
Take the staff of Azucar Picante Restorante & Cantina at 13062 — 50 St., who have organized a fundraiser for Friday night in hopes of giving the whole city a chance to help out.
“I think what happened in Haiti can happen to anybody,” said General Manager Giancarlo Higinio. “We thought we could contribute to this great cause throughout our community. Not just bring the Latin community, but involve the whole Edmonton community, which is why we are calling the fundraiser Edmonton’s Hope for Haiti.”
Higinio said the restaurant hopes to raise around $5,000. Proceeds will be divided between Heart to Heart Haiti, the Canadian Red Cross and the Edmonton Multicultural Society, which has been helping families arrive from Haiti since the earthquake.
Highlights include performances from Latin music groups, a raffle and a silent auction with gift certificates worth up to $500 and tickets to an Edmonton Oilers game. Tickets for the event are still available for tonight, and are only $10.
