Authorities are investigating the cause of a Revere man’s death following a violent altercation with officers.

Massachusetts State Police are looking into the death of an unidentified 38-year-old man who had been hospitalized for a mental health evaluation one week prior, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.

Revere Police responded to a report of a man who had smashed through a window and broken into a relative’s home. Officers found him in a stairwell bleeding, but combative. After a brief standoff, the man released a child who was home when he broke in.

According to the DA’s Office, the man then started punching, kicking and biting officers. At one point during this struggle, the man is said to have broken another window and tried to jump out.

Officers used a stun gun on the man to no effect.

Police finally subdued him following a lengthy struggle with several officers, who were able to put him in an ambulance and restrain him on a stretcher.

The man was taken to Whidden Hospital, where he died. Hospital workers did not see any physical trauma beyond the lacerations he suffered from from breaking through the window.
