Rising water tables cause of condo flood: Officials

Acts of nature are to blame for a massive downtown condo building flood that forced residents to clear their vehicles from the parkade, say city officials.

Mike MacIsaac of City of Calgary Water Services said water from the Bow River seeped into the parkade of the Marquis Condo tower at 1108 6th Ave SW yesterday morning because of rising water tables.

“It’s an act of nature and beyond anyone’s control. When the ice builds up you just don’t know where the water flow is going to go,” he said.

MacIsaac said the city was pumping water out of the system in an effort to help the condo pump water out of the parkade.

Despite warmer temperatures on the horizon, the city doesn’t expect the change in weather to cause more water problems.

“No, it won’t be a problem unless it was plus ten for a couple days in a row,” MacIsaac added.
