Police will be cracking down on motorists who drive impaired and speed next month.
The city’s Integrated Road Safety Program is teaming up with CAA North and East Ontario to man additional R.I.D.E. checkpoints throughout the festive season.
In 2008, seven people died and 154 others were injured in 373 impaired driving-related collisions on Ottawa roads. Eighty-one per cent of the impaired drivers were male and 34 per cent were between the ages of 16 and 25.
Speeding was also a problem in Ottawa in 2008, when nine people died and another 990 were injured in 3,592 collisions as a result of drivers exceeding the speed limit or driving too fast for conditions.
