Christian Gerhartsreiter, the man who for years pretended to be a member of the infamous Rockefeller family, was convicted of murder by a California jury Wednesday.

Gerhartsreiter, also known as Clark Rockefeller, was convicted of killing John Sohus in 1985, according to the Globe. Gerhartsreiter at the time lived in a guesthouse owned by Sohus’ mother.

In 2009, Gerhartsreiter was convicted of kidnapping his 7-year-old daughter on a Back Bay street during a supervised visit and fleeing for days. He was sentenced to up to five years in prison for that crime, but will face a much longer sentence for the murder.

“Beyond his lies and tall tales, what we saw in this defendant was a shrewd and cunning offender,” said Suffolk District Attorney Dan Conley in a statement after Wednesday’s conviction. “We saw a man who planned his crimes in advance and took great pains to escape accountability, just like the one convicted today in Los Angeles. Christian Karl Gerhartsreiter was a mystery untilhe was identified, located, and convicted for his crimes here.”
