Safety blitz on LRT

Calgary police and Calgary Transit will blitz riders during a September crime-prevention and safety campaign launched yesterday.

The 11th annual LRT Blitz, launched to coincide with an increase in transit ridership during September, will raise law enforcement presence on city transit platforms, trains and parking lots until Sept. 25.

“The goal of the campaign is to enhance public safety in C-Train areas in an actual or perceived way,” said Sgt. Tory Fassnidge, District 6 LRT Blitz supervisor.

Increased presence also aims to deter any inappropriate behaviour in and around C-Train stations.

Const. Steve Greenhough said police receive a lot of positive feedback for their presence from riders — especially women and the elderly. He said patrolling, or “flying the flag,” lets people know they are out there.

Insp. Richard Hinse of District 6 said that although this campaign will only run for three weeks, police and Calgary Transit will continue ensuring safety yearround.

Police and transit security handed out several tickets on LRT platforms after the launch.
