The Saint Mary’s Huskies are appealing a three-game suspension to Atlantic University Sport’s top rusher.
The AUS suspended second-year running back Devon Jones yesterday for an incident that occurred during last Friday’s 41-7 victory over the St. Francis Xavier X-Men. The physical confrontation in the fourth quarter resulted in X-Men defensive lineman Yahia Dalloul being knocked to the ground.
The decision would put Jones, an all-rookie selection last year, out of the lineup for Friday’s regular-season finale against the Acadia Axemen at Huskies Stadium, as well as the Loney Bowl and the Uteck Bowl, if the Huskies go that far.
“The guy’s helmet came off, he got blocked at that time, and I guess they’re calling it a punch,” Huskies head coach Steve Sumarah said last night. “It’s an interesting situation, I’ll put it that way. It’s tough to make that call.”
Jones, the son of former CFL great Milson Jones, leads the AUS with 490 yards and six majors in seven games.
“I don’t remember anyone being suspended for three games,” said Sumarah. “We won’t go against what the league says but there’s an appeal process and we’re going to follow it.”
