SAIT students to show off skills

With 18 per cent of the entire WorldSkills Team Canada coming from SAIT, the Calgary trade school unveiled their young competitors yesterday set to take the world skills competition by storm in two weeks.

Seven of the Team Canada WorldSkills 2009 members come from SAIT, the most from any post-secondary school in the country, according SAIT vice-president Guy Mallabone.

“They have spent countless hours prepping and training and it shows the dedication and commitment these young ambassadors have for their professions,” Mallabone said. “I encourage Albertans to come down and watch these young talents take on the world.”

Leading up to the competition, the young team members have been training 40 hours a week or more in their trades, including Devon DeBoer, who completed his third-year auto body repair apprenticeship in December 2008.

“We’re like a family because we have all been spending as much time as we can together and we’re supporting one another and doing everything we can together,” DeBoer said of his fellow teammates.

“It’s really exciting to be a part of something like this.”

The city is only two weeks away from the competition, which will see thousands descend upon the city for the world’s pinnacle of global trades and skills competition from Sept. 1 to Sept. 7 at Stampede Park.
