The downtown restaurant business is booming these days and the Downtown Business Association is keen to keep the popularity going.

The association is hosting Downtown Dining Week starting Friday, with the promotion entering its seventh year.

“From 2009 to 2010 we went from 24 to 29 restaurants, and in 2008 we only had 17,” said Kathleen Ong, a spokesperson for the Downtown Business Association. “In terms of restaurants joining the program, we have definitely increased over the last couple of years.”

Restaurant goers can choose from hundreds of custom menu creations priced at $15, $25, and $50 excluding beverages, tax and gratuities.

“We’ve been involved in this for three years,” said Ulrika Chapman, manager of the Free Press Bistro. “It’s just a way to get people interested in downtown restaurants and downtown in general.”

Chapman said Downtown Dining Week is a good way for restaurants to show off their menus.

“We use it to encourage people to come in and try some of the delicious things on our menu,” she said. “Other than specializing in sandwiches, we want people to know that we have other things as well that are just as great.”
