Hey guys, how about a little help here?
That has to be what Johan Santana is thinking yet again this season. The Mets have scored just 42 runs in Santana’s 13 starts. Tonight’s as good a time as any to help out their ace, as the Mets are coming off their first three-game road sweep since 2008.
“We know it’s been an issue since he’s been here,”?David Wright said earlier this season. “We can’t rely on him or any one guy to bail [the offense] out.”
Of course, Santana has not helped himself lately. He gave up four earned runs on eight hits and struggled with his command in last Thursday’s loss to San Diego, which dropped him to 4-3, The left-hander never had a feel for his pitches in his first start after eight days off. He had just one strikeout while throwing 108 pitches to watch his ERA rise from 2.76 to 2.96.
“I think the layoff probably hurt him more than anything,” Jerry Manuel said. “You always try to find a way to give him a day, [but] when [you] have a rainout and an off day, that’s too much time away from the mound for him.”
