Three New York players rule NFL jersey sales with two rookies helping set the pace in the top 10 most popular jersey bought across the country.
Saquon Barkley, fresh off 43 yards on four carries in his preseason debut on Thursday night, is the top selling jersey in the league according to Dick’s Sporting Goods. Barkley, the second-overall pick to the New York Giants, rose from No. 2 in the league a week ago to now holding the top spot in the entirety of the NFL.
The former Penn State running back is surely helped in the jersey sales department by being in the largest market in the league as well as having a fervent following in Happy Valley.
Cracking into the top 10 this week is Sam Darnold. Taken one pick after Barkley, the New York Jets moved multiple picks to acquire the third-overall selection in April’s draft then took Darnold. On Friday night in his preseason debut for the New York Jets, Darnold sparkled against the second and third team units of the Atlanta Falcons.
Darnold finished the game 13-of-18 for 96 yards with a touchdown and he figures to get more snaps in the second preseason game this Thursday against the Washington Redskins.
Last week, Darnold’s No. 14 was No. 20 in jersey sales according to Dick’s. The spike in sales is clearly related to the promise of his showing on Friday for the Jets.
Also making the top 10 is Odell Beckham Jr. at sixth, falling one spot from the week before. The New York Giants wide receiver is consistently one of the top-selling jerseys in the league.
At No. 2 overall is Carson Wentz, the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback has held the top spot for the past several weeks until Barkley knocked him off this past week. At third is Denver Broncos edge rusher Von Miller (who rose from the eighth spot the week before), then New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.
Darnold is one of five quarterbacks in the top 10 list according to Dick’s and is the only rookie in the top 10. Baker Mayfield, the top overall pick in the draft, checks in at No. 11.
