School-system bias cuts tech institute

The fall of Timothy Eaton Business and Technical Institute says much about our muddled view of the trades workers we’re so short of: We need them, we love watching them — Holmes on Homes! — but heaven forbid our kid would want to be one.

“There’s been a bias in the school system that perpetuates the myth you’re only safe if you go to college or university,” says Vera Taylor, who oversees a pilot project at the Toronto District School Board to bring skilled training in from the cold.

For three years, industry pumped in money and tools to the project.

Still, Timothy Eaton could not attract more students from its highly immigrant neighbourhood where few seemed to have heard about the program
