Search for prisoner disrupts normal routines

Prisoner Jermaine Carvery’s escape unleashed a city-wide search yesterday, and some unlucky Haligonians got caught in the action.
Around 5:30 p.m., police evacuated and secured the MetroPark parking garage on Hollis Street and a K-9 unit searched the building’s seven levels while a line of commuters waited outside to retrieve their cars.
“I wouldn’t mind so much if it was July,” one driver joked.
But he said he’d rather not be part of all the excitement, and would prefer to get home.
Police finished the search after about 15 minutes, and drivers were allowed to get their vehicles.
Earlier in the day, cops started out near the Victoria General hospital, searched through a condo construction site on South Street and then the Holy Cross Cemetery on South Park Street.
Paul Whitehouse, a clerk at a small shop inside the hospital, said he’d been working there since 1999 and had never heard of a prisoner escaping.
“Hopefully they get him,” he said.
Later in the evening, Staff Sgt. Brenda Zima with the Halifax Regional Police said officers were still looking for the 30-year-old convict and had started spreading their efforts outside the peninsula.
“I don’t want to get really specific because obviously we don’t want him to know where we’re looking for him at,” he said.
