Chicago’s Second City — the improv group that churned out the likes of Tina Fey and Bill Murray — will return to the Cape Playhouse next month to tackle the most hilarious of all current events: the election. They’ll bring “Free Speech! (While Supplies Last),” a mix of skits and audience-driven improv inspired by this presidential race and the regular topics of discussion (gun control, feminism, etc.).

The show, which is currently in San Diego at the La Jolla Playhouse, features a six-member cast that take on Trump and Clinton in a way that’s both satirically biting and perhaps, frighteningly all-too-real. A critic for the San Diego Union Tribune wrote of the show, “It’s not all about making jaws drop, though; it’s also about getting the consciousness raised via some (relatively) clean and at times surprisingly sincere set pieces.”

Reviews suggest it’s almost a less literal/perhaps more woke version of “Portlandia,” asthe San Diego Reader focusedzones in on a particular skit that features an Artisanal Firearms Boutique in Brooklyn: “The boutique doesn’t sell ‘guns,’ they say, because ‘guns kill people,’” they write in their critique. “Artisanal firearms simply ‘hasten their destiny.’”

“Free Speech! (While Supplies Last)” will perform evenings at the Cape Playhouse Sept. 13th to the 17th. The production is Second City’s second visit to the Dennis theater, following their 2015 sold-out engagement, “Fully Loaded.”
