The second woman struck by lightning on an Ipswich beach earlier this month has died.

Marianne Mellnick, 69, of Concord, Mass. died on Saturday, September 13, at Massachusetts General Hospital, according to police. Mellnick was struck Sept. 6 on Crane Beach as storms battered the shoreline.

Acting Police Chief Jonathan Hubbard called the death “a terrible tragedy.”

Marguerite “Muggy” Tomany, 61 of North Grosvenor Dale, Conn., who was with Mellnick at the time, was also struck by lightning on that beach and was pronounced dead earlier this month.
