See Bruce Springsteen before & after fame at a free art show

For a working-class hero, Bruce Springsteen never really struggled like the average Americans he’s spent more than 40 years singing about.

He’ll be the first to admit that — as he does every night of his five-month sold-out Broadway concert series — but you can still see the boy from New Jersey in a new photo exhibit.

Photographer Frank Stefanko has been by Springsteen’s side through Darkness on the Edge of Town and Born to Run. At a new show at SoHo’s Morrison Hotel Gallery, he’s sharing 35 never-before-seen images of the rock ‘n’ roll icon from his new book, Bruce Springsteen: Further Up the Road.

The free exhibit, open from Nov. 10-30, might be your only chance to see these photos: The limited edition 400-page book is available only as a deluxe set ($630) or a collector’s edition ($380); prints are $600 each.

“He managed to strip away your celebrity, your artifice, and get to the raw you,” Springsteen wrote about Stefanko in his autobiography. “His photos had a purity and a street poetry to them. They were lovely and true, but they weren’t slick.”

The photos chosen for the exhibit range from moments captured mid-concert to relaxing with the E Street Band, and contrasts a cocky young Springsteen with the current approachably cool rocker.

“His pictures captured the people I was writing about in my songs and showed me the part of me that was still one of them,” Springsteen continued. Ordinarily, this would be your cue to roll our eyes at a celebrity claiming to be “just like us,” but Springsteen actually pulls it off.

So while you have to be either very lucky or rich to see him onstage, this exhibit is for everyone — just like his music.

The Morrison Hotel Gallery is located at 116 Prince St., open Mon-Sat from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. and Sunday noon-6 p.m. For more information, visit morrisonhotelgallery.com.
