Sen. to Iran leader: Pledge or go home

On the eve of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s arrival in the Big Apple, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer said the Iranian president should just turn around if he’s not ready to follow the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Ahmadinejad, who often causes a stir when he comes to the city, is attending the United Nations non-proliferation conference, even through Iran has been found in violation of the international treating for pursuing nuclear weapons capability. He is to address to the monthlong conference on its opening day today. The U.S. has called for strict sanctions on Iran.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who suggested yesterday he is attending to distract attendees from their goal, is to speak after him.

“If Iran is coming to say we’re willing to abide by the Non-Proliferation Treaty, that would be very welcome news,” Clinton said on ‘Meet the Press.’ “I have a feeling that’s not what they’re coming to do. I think they’re coming to try to divert attention and confuse the issue. And there is no confusion. They have violated the terms of the NPT.”

During Ahmadinejad’s last visit to New York in September, several hotels refused to host the Iranian delegation.
