Move over, Jon Snow? HBO has made a five year deal with Sesame Workshop, which is the company behind the much-loved “Sesame Street.” New episodes will now air on HBO first, and be accessible over the various other HBO services (HBO Now, HBO Go, etc) as well before coming to PBS nine months later.
“It provides Sesame Workshop with the critical funding it needs to be able to continue production of Sesame Street,” said Sesame Workshop CEO Jeffrey D. Dunn in a statement. And despite its premium channel home, “it allows Sesame Street to continue to air on PBS and reach all children, as it has for the past 45 years.”
“Sesame Street” won’t be the only show the company makes for its new partner. There are also plans for a Muppets spinoff show and an entirely new program that will, as usual, be educational.
The co-founder of “Sesame Street,”Joan Ganz Cooney, also weighed in, saying, “Over the past decade, both the way in which children are consuming video and the economics of the children’s television production business have changed dramatically. In order to fund our nonprofit mission with a sustainable business model, Sesame Workshop must recognize these changes and adapt to the times.”
