Seven proposals submitted in city’s plan to build applied sciences campus

Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced Monday that seven proposals from 17 schools were submitted in response to the city’s initiative to build an applied sciences campus on city property. Many of the schools partnered with other institutions in their bids. Among the proposed locations for the campus are Governor’s Island, Brooklyn Navy Yard and Roosevelt Island.

“Universities are always a major magnet for talent, and the world’s most dynamic companies always gravitate to places where they can find the best and the brightest,” Mayor Bloomberg said. “Along with everything we are doing to diversify and strengthen our economy, a new applied sciences campus has the potential to be a real economic game changer that will create jobs immediately, and for generations.”

The proposals for the campus, dubbed Applied Sciences NYC, range from plans for a 400,000 square foot facility to one more than 2 million square feet. City officials are not releasing the details of the proposals, though some of the schools, including Cornell University and Stanford University, have made portions of their plans public. The mayor did say the proposals submitted include a focus on areas like information technology, public health and electrical engineering.

“All the proposals are stronger than anything we could have possibly imagined,” Mayor Bloomberg said.

The winning proposal will receive access to a city-owned piece of property and up to $100 million in city capitol. The city estimates Applied Sciences NYC could net $6 billion in economic growth over the next 35 years as well as 30,000 new jobs, including construction positions.

An advisory committee, made up of academic, civil and business professionals, is expected to announce its selection in January. After a negotiation period, groundbreaking for the project could begin next year. Mayor Bloomberg said there is not front-runner at this stage of the selection process.
