Seventy-five Calgary officers picked for Olympics

They won’t be competing for gold medals, but 75 Calgary police officers are heading to the Vancouver Olympic Games to serve and protect.

An overwhelming response of hundreds of Calgary officers vied for the honour to spend their time off patrolling in Vancouver, but they will also make extra money, according to acting Staff Sgt. Ryan Ayliffe.

“They will be working on their paid (vacation time) and they will also be compensated for their work by the Olympic committee, so it’s a bonus for the officers,” Ayliffe said.

“But a lot of them are going for the whole experience and to be able to work with officers from across the country.”

The officers are using time off for the assignment, so it won’t affect staffing levels on Calgary streets while they are gone, Ayliffe added.

The officers will conduct general patrolling duties, other than the three bomb technicians who will use their technical skills.
