Sharks sighted in Oyster Bay

A beachgoer snapped this photo of the incident Thursday at Tobay Beach.

A lifeguard spotted a shark a little before noon by the shore of Tobey Beach on Thursday. After the whistle was blown, beach goers at Cedbar, Overlook and Tobay beaches were not allowed to re-enter the water before the police surveyed the shore.

From a helicopter, police spotted two sharks that were each six-feet-long and only 15 feet from the shore. The two sharks were seen moving eastward towards Gilgo Beach in Suffolk County, reported ABC 7. Later, a six-foot shark and a baby shark were seen by the water.

No injuries were reported.

Beach goers, about 2,000 at the time, were able to return to the water at 2 p.m.

Tobay Beach is a popular New York summer destination located in the middle of Jones Beach Island, a barrier island off the South Shore of Long Island. The beach was set to remain open through the weekend.
