Shatner boldly goes into world of wild salmon conservation

The Canadian actor best known for his role as Capt. James T. Kirk in the Star Trek wore another hat Thursday – that of a wild salmon activist.

William Shatner has joined efforts to protect the West Coast’s wild salmon from potential sea lice.

“I’m here because of my deep concern, not only for British Columbia and wildlife, but for wildlife all over the world,” said Shatner, who beamed into a press conference held at Ottawa’s National Press Theatre Thursday.

“It is our duty as citizens of Canada to harness our resources and keep them whole and keep them from being desecrated,” Shatner said.

The actor was joined by New Democrat MP Fin Donnelly, who has introduced a private member’s bill that would require fish farms to move from B.C.’s coast to closed containment systems on land.

“Something must be done,” said Shatner, who said he was angered by the damage companies are inflicting.

“As a father and grandfather, I wish for my offspring to see the same things I did,” he said.
