No other show than the BBC’s “Sherlock” has given viewers so much with so little, keeping them in the perpetual state of a Charles Dickens character about whether this is the last time they will get any more.

But Martin Freeman, who plays Dr. John Watson, dropped the first hint of what’s to come for the show since its third season aired in January in an interview with Britain’s The Telegraph. He revealed that “Sherlock” will resume filming early next year — for what will likely be a Christmas 2015 special.

The series has always been a less-than-conventional creature on television, airing three hour-and-a-half-long episodes per season. But even a Christmas special would be a triumph of scheduling for two actors as in demand as Freeman and his co-star, Benedict Cumberbatch, who is currentlyin Boston filming a Whitey Bulger movie.

But that wasn’t the only new information Freeman dropped about the fate of the show — more specifically, its characters. Freeman’s real-life partner, Amanda Abbington, joined the series this year as Watson’s wife Mary Morstan. And if you don’t know your Holmes canon, stop reading now.

“While we play fast and loose with the original stories, we generally follow the trajectory of what [Arthur] Conan Doyle did. So [Watson] gets married, and then Mary dies — so at some point presumably she’ll die,” Freeman told the Telegraph.
