Shingles help to build hope

Help keep a roof over homeless women and children’s heads just one shingle at a time this month.
The inaugural YWCA and RBC keep a Roof Over Their Heads fundraiser will give Calgarians an opportunity to help “shingle” a roof to house women and children who need it.
Arlene Adamson, director of the YWCA Mary Dover House told Metro it costs about $100 a day to support a woman and her child in crisis housing.
“So we’re asking groups, individuals or teams to collectively come together and raise a “shingle”, which is the equivalent of $1,000,” Adamson said.
The goal, she said, is to raise $100,000 to go towards the transitional housing facility, which is home to 96 women and children each night.
“We also want to raise awareness of this important issue that women and children in our community need services like this. Homelessness affects everyone.”
The organization is calling for citizens to come together and nominate an individual or group to raise $1,000 to provide a shingle for the shelter.
On April 17 the nominees who raised the target will be invited to Chinook Centre to personalize their shingle.
