Shooting near school

A 19-year-old was shot dead at close range yesterday morning on a sidewalk across the street from a northeast Toronto high school.

The victim, who Toronto police Det. Sgt. Dan Sheppard said was targeted by his killer, did not attend Blessed Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School, school administrators and police said.

“I want to make sure it’s well-known at this point that the school has nothing to do with this,” Sheppard said.

Sheppard said there is “no indication at this point” that the murder has “anything to do with any gangs,” which have plagued the neighbourhood near the school in the past.

The victim, shot “multiple” times around 10:30 a.m., was rushed to Centenary hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police did not identify him yesterday.

The shooting occurred on the northwest corner of Sewells Road and McLevin Avenue.
