Smoke alarms saved lives: Firefighters

Firefighters are crediting fire detectors with saving lives after a dozen people were forced out of their homes in two separate weekend fires.
The first fire broke out Saturday night in the detached garage of a Citadel home but thankfully the family of five was alerted by the smoke alarm and they were able to escape without injury.
Fire spokesperson Jeff Budai told Metro the fire alarm saved the lives of the family, who were able to make it out right away.
“This is another example of how properly working fire alarms save lives. It’s huge. The family escaped because of the alarm,” Budai said.
The second fire occurred early Sunday morning in the basement of a northeast home where there were seven occupants. Firefighters were able to put out the fire, which started in a mattress, but one person was brought to hospital with smoke inhalation.
