It was only a week ago that Spring-like temperatures graced the Commonwealth with visions of crocuses in bloom, cookouts, and first pitches at Fenway filled the minds of many.
Unfortunately, those two days were but a tease.
The National Weather Service is predicting a first-rate sloppy mess of a wintry mix starting mid-day on Tuesday. The first signs of the snowstorm are expected to roll in from the west at about 1 p.m., bringing a brutal buffet of snow/rain/sleet just in time for the evening commute with temperatures hovering around 32 degrees. Visibility is expected to drop and road conditions will be slippery and unpleasant during rush hour. Experts say we could get anywhere from one to three inches, with the possibility of one to two inches falling per hour at the height of the storm.
The Greater Boston Area, Cape Cod and the Islands, and the North Shore are expected to see some snow accumulate, before washing away as the storm rolls through and temperatures rise. Western Mass. is expected to get three to six inches of snow, followed by ice and rain. The Berkshires, southwestern New Hampshire, and Vermont will get six to nine inches of snow.
Experts predict that wind speeds will reach near-gale force from Tuesday evening until midday Friday, with gusts topping out between about 20 mph to under 35 mph.
The storm is expected to burn itself out on Wednesday afternoon. Temperatures are expected to reach about 45 degrees during the day, and will drop to about 28 in the evening with mostly overcast skies.
Thursday should be sunny with a high of 42 degrees with high winds. The evening hours will see about a 10 degree drop with high, but variable wind speeds.
Friday and Saturday will be rainy, but less windy with highs in the upper 40’s and lows in the upper 30’s.
Sunday will clear up, turning into a sunny day with a high temperature just over 35 degrees.
