An unusually snowy winter means that in the first two months of 2014, more than double the number of tickets have been issued to New Yorkers who fail to shovel snow than in all of 2013, according to International Business Times.
So far this year, the city has issued 11,597 snow removal summonses across the five boroughs compared to 5,096 in 2013.
Failure to shovel your property is an offense punishable by a fine of between $10 to $150 or even jail time, but Sanitation Department spokesperson Kimberly Dawkins said the department had no intention of putting offenders behind bars.
“Keep in mind that the Department of Sanitation is mandated to remove snow and ice from 6,300 street miles during a given snowstorm,” she told IBT. “That is the Department’s first priority.”
