Snowmobile death under investigation

Police are investigating the death of a 51-year-old Ottawa man following a snowmobile collision in western Quebec late Saturday night.

The collision occurred at a snowmobile trail near Quyon in the Pontiac district at 10:26 p.m. Police arrived shortly afterward, where the man’s wife allegedly told officers that she had been driving the snowmobile when it tipped over.

She allegedly said the man fell off and hit a tree, said MRC des Collines-de l’Outaouais Sgt. Stéphane Forget yesterday.

The man, whose name is not being released, was taken to hospital in Shawville, but was later transferred to the hospital in Hull where he died from his injuries.

After investigating the scene, the officers found evidence and witness statements contradicted the woman’s statements.

“There are a lot of elements pointing to the direction that the man who died was the driver of a different snowmobile,” said Forget. “There is a part still under investigation to determine how many snowmobiles were involved in this accident and what snowmobile was driven by the man who died.”

A woman is now under investigation for misleading police.

Forget said alcohol may have been a factor in the collision. A coroner is investigating.
