The first Sonic Boom festival rocked Edmonton’s Northlands Park from noon to night Saturday. Nine bands, including Metric, Franz Ferdinand and Alexisonfire entertained a crowd of over 11,000 screaming fans.

Event organizers and Sonic 102.9 staffers anticipate the first-of-its-kind one-day modern rock festival will become an annual staple, adding to Edmonton’s Festival City namesake.

Sonic Boom MC Jason Mewes (of Jay and Silent Bob fame) warms up a crowd of thousands for Metric. The group took the stage between Girl Talk and Franz Ferdinand at the festival on Saturday. Mewes introduced each band through the duration of the one-day festival, and often reminded partiers to “drink water and stay safe.”
