Sonic Boom set to rock Edmonton

Just when you thought the city couldn’t possibly host another summer festival, the maestros of modern rock bring you Sonic Boom 2010.

The second incarnation of Edmonton’s rock festival is set to go on Saturday, Sept. 4 at Northlands.

Last year’s festival was headlined by Billy Talent and included Franz Ferdinand, Metric and Alexisonfire.

This year’s festival promises to be even bigger and better.

Ten bands are being featured at this year’s festival. The Dirty Heads kick things off at 12:05 p.m., followed by Arkells, Mother Mother, Tokyo Police Club, Wintersleep, Bad Religion, City and Colour, Weezer and, finally, Rise Against at 9:20 p.m.

The Chicago-based punk band has a major following in Canada and around the world.

Frontman Tim McIlrath says the foursome — including bassist Joe Principe, drummer Brandon Barnes and guitarist Zach Blair — simply engage in their album-making activity without over-thinking and precisely planning each step, including their latest release, Appeal to Reason.

For McIlrath, creating connections to the band’s audience is of paramount importance — regardless of size, scenes or musical styles.

Weezer is made up of Rivers Cuomo (lead vocals, guitar), Patrick Wilson (drums, backing vocals), Brian Bell (guitar, backing vocals, keyboards) and Scott Shriner (bass, backing vocals, keyboards).

The band has released seven full-length albums, six EPs, and a DVD. Weezer have sold more than nine million records in the U.S. to date.

The band is best known for their successful singles Buddy Holly, Undone — The Sweater Song, Island in the Sun, Beverly Hills, and Pork and Beans.
