Source: Ambroise Oyongo very nearly transferred to Turkey; European teams making offers

The pursuit of Ambroise Oyongo by foreign teams continues, this as the Montreal Impact outside back very nearly signed with a top European side on Tuesday.

Oyongo very nearly landed in Turkey on Tuesday, a league source tells Metro, saying that a deal that would have sent the Cameroonian international to one of the top clubs in Europe nearly came through. But Oyongo, a regular with Cameroon’s national team and a player who stood out in the recent African Cup of Nations, was unable to secure a last-gasp move to Europe. Turkey’s transfer window closed on Tuesday meaning that any move by Oyongo to that country’s league will need to wait until the summer.

But that’s not to say that the Impact ace, set to turn 26-years old this summer, won’t eventually end up in Europe. Per the league source, official offers have been made for Oyongo from several clubs in Turkey, France, Switzerland and even in England. Oyongo first came to MLS in 2014 and by midsummer had become a regular in the New York Red Bulls Starting XI under then head coach Mike Petke. By that fall he was getting a call-up to the international level from Cameroon.

A stay in MLS for Oyongo doesn’t look likely. In the last year of his contract with the league, the source also says that the Impact have enquired about an extension for Oyongo but that a deal might be difficult to reach.

In three seasons of MLS play, Oyongo has 59 starts with one goal and eight assists. He is considered one of the top outside backs in the league.​
