Spirit of the skate

Operations director Allison Mailer and former Canadian national champion figure skater turned singer/actor Emanuel Sandhu pose in front of John Ferrie’s giant figure skate in the lobby of the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame.

I am a figure skating fan. It’s pretty much my favourite Winter Olympic sport to watch because it comes complete with all kinds of judging drama, elaborate costumes and athletic prowess.

Canada has produced more than its fair share of Olympic skating stars and last week — in honour of their achievements — the Spirit Of The Skate Fundraising Reception was held at the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame.

Former medal winners and world champions were on hand as guests bid on specially decorated skates all in support of the Hero In You education program.

And speaking of exciting, the Vancouver Convention Centre was buzzing with activity all weekend as the 7th Annual Taboo Naughty But Nice Sex Show made sure everyone picked up on all the good vibrations.

Skater and 1984 Olympian Gary Beacom and wife/skating coach Deena Beacom made the trip from Victoria for the silent auction and reception.

Smart Tart designer Kat surrounds herself with ultra feminine pink and white feathers and decorations at the Taboo show.

Ace Angels’ Chanel Parent, left, and Alexis Hanson stroll the floor handing out samples at the Taboo show.

Malcolm and Janice Hunter, of Trev Deeley fame, bought a pair of bright pink skates decorated by rocker Bif Naked just after she discovered she had been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Retired Vancouver chief Const. Jamie Graham, left, gets help from Vancouver Board of Trade’s Blair Qualey to hold up his decorated skates that come complete with a toy police car.

Eighteen-year-old Jeremy Ten, of North Van, shows off his decorated skates and is excited about going to the Canadian Nationals, which start here in Vancouver tomorrow.

BMO Financial Group and VIP guests Jennifer Stanford, left, and Laurie Grant are proud to be presenting sponsors of the upcoming 2008 BMO Canadian Figure Skating Championships in Vancouver.

Cammie and Troy Teather, of Vancouver Custom Chopper, show-off one of their custom-built bikes at the Taboo show.

In 1972 she became Canada’s sweetheart with an Olympic silver medal victory. Today, Karen Magnussen, still coaches the sport and was delighted to decorate skates for the auction.

A little leather here and there never hurt anyone according to Taboo show exhibitors Stuart Veal, left, Velvet Steele and Lance Piercy.
