When Tufts beat Cortland State in the NCAA Division III lacrosse quarterfinals, they earned a berth in the national semis against RIT this Sunday.

For the Jumbos' eight seniors, that would have meant missing their commencement ceremony.

Not anymore.

Tufts has arranged a special graduation ceremony for the senior men's lax players -- with caps, gowns and university bigwigs included -- at 9 a.m. Friday, before the team's trip to Rochester.

"The Tufts community is excited to recognize these exceptional athletes who have worked so hard and performed so well on the lacrosse field and in the classroom," Tufts president Larry Bacow said in a statement. "We're proud of everything they have accomplished, and we want to ensure that we have the chance to honor them."

The university did the same thing last year, when the team went on to win the Div. III national title.
