Adams high risk, high reward for Phillies

It's a gamble, but when hasn't Ruben Amaro, Jr. been prone to gambling.

The Phillies officially introduced new bullpen arm Mike Adams Thursday. He'll earn $12 million over the next two seasons while serving as the team's setup guy.

"I'm just excited about the opportunity to play for the Phillies," Adams said. "I know this is a place where the fans are very rabid about their Phillies. This is one of those places where it's exciting to come to the ballpark every day and I'm excited about coming here every day."

Since 2008, Adams has been lights out. He's posted a 1.98 ERA while striking out 311 batters in that span. But the 34-year-old recorded a 3.27 ERA last season and underwent surgery for a condition called Thoracic Outlet Syndrome.

"Last year was a struggle for me," Adams said.

Adams insists he'll be ready for spring training, but there is a risk he won't regain his form.

"While there is some risk to it, it probably was a good risk," Amaro said. "This is a guy who can solidify our bullpen."
