It took exactly one half of football before owners were in full panic mode, looking at their waiver wire.
Kevin Ogletree had the game of his life on a big stage Wednesday night, hauling in eight catches for 114 yards and two touchdowns against the Giants. Am I falling all over myself to add him? No. Here’s why:
1. Ogletree is not as talented as last year’s No. 3 wideout, Laurent Robinson: Ogletree is a former undrafted free agent whose previous career high in catches was 15. Let’s stop the Robinson comparisons.
2. The Giants were really banged up in the secondary. Corey Webster was shadowing Dez Bryant. Prince Amukamura and Terrell Thomas were hurt. Michael Coe left the game early. Ogletree ate up Justin Tryon, a borderline NFL talent. Most teams will have better slot corners.
3. Ogletree remains the No. 4 option at best: Dez Bryant, Miles Austin and Jason Witten (once healthy) are all on top of Ogletree on the totem pole. He won’t play in two-wide sets.
4. Defenses are aware now: After Wednesday’s breakout on a national stage, teams will be ready for Ogletree. He won’t get singled up against anyone’s worst corner over and over again.
Someone actually asked me this morning if they should drop Hakeem Nicks for Ogletree. Stay calm, folks. I wouldn’t even drop Brandon LaFell or Titus Young or Austin Collie for Ogletree.
