Carl Crawford may have been the Red Sox’s biggest offseason splash, but since the regular season began, it’s Crawford’s hitting that has taken a dive.
On a team littered with hitting slumps, Crawford’s plight is becoming the most glaring, failing to provide any of the batting and baserunning spark that made him worthy of a seven-year, $142 million free agent contract.
The Red Sox have tried everything to get Crawford started, moving him up and down the batting order, from third to seventh to second, then finally installing him in the leadoff spot for the weekend series against the Yankees — someplace Crawford hadn’t been since the first week of the 2007 season.
But after going 1-for-10 in the first two games of the series, Crawford’s woes continued last night against the Yankees’ CC Sabathia. Crawford went 0-for-4 against the big lefty, with a groundout, a soft fly ball, a drive to the warning track and a sharp groundout to first.
