Amar’e Stoudemire: ‘We might be best team in the league’

The Knicks’ playoff hopes were extinguished over the weekend, but don’t tell that to Amar’e Stoudemire, who thinks they could be among the best in the NBA.

“On paper, we might be the best team in the league,” Stoudemire said before hosting the Bulls on Sunday night.

The comments spurred immediate jokes on Twitter as the Knicks stood at 34-45 prior to last night’s game. Stoudemire wouldn’t even bail out when asked if the expectations were too high for the Knicks coming into the season. He said expectations “should have been higher.”

The Knicks’ over/under total in Las Vegas was 50.5, according to Bovada.

Head coach Mike Woodson showed less bravado than his highest-paid player, taking a share of the blame for the Knicks missing the postseason for the first time since 2009-10 when Mike D’Antoni was in his second season as head coach.

“At the end of the day, I’m the coach, and I didn’t get it done,” Woodson said, apologizing to fans for missing out on the playoffs.

Woodson’s status with the team remains very much in limbo as new president Phil Jackson reportedly would like to bring in his own man in charge. He has said he would speak to Woodson after the season ends, however. The Knicks play at the Nets on Tuesday and close out the season on Wednesday with the Raptors.
