As always, O’Neal a center of attention

The jersey was thrown on, and Shaquille O’Neal immediately became “The Big Shamrock.”

The jersey was thrown on, and Shaquille O’Neal immediately became “The Big Shamrock.”

While challenging reporters to a clam chowder eating contest, O’Neal made his way around the Celtics’ training facility — and the 17 banners hanging there — yesterday.

Shaq was brought in by Celtics president Danny Ainge in an effort to make another run at a ring. Eccentricities aside, Ainge said he thinks he can play a vital role in the success of the team this season.

“Shaq obviously has a great deal of cachet in our locker room because of what he’s accomplished in his career, so I guess he can lead guys down one way or another,” Ainge said. “I think that he wants to win as bad as anybody, so I have a great deal of confidence that he will be a positive influence in our locker room.”

While O’Neal has been the centerpiece of teams throughout his impressive career, he appears to be satisfied with taking a step back and helping out any way he can.

“Whatever Doc [Rivers] needs me to do, that’s what I’m going to do,” O’Neal said. “When I first came in, my first 17 years were all about me, and scoring, and this. And now that that part of my game is over it’s about time for me to be a damn good role player.”
