Rex Grossman was so bad, so horrific on Sunday that Mike Shanahan had no choice. He had to make the move to John Beck. Grossman combined the rare feat of being brutally inaccurate along with poor decision-making. The sad part is that Grossman’s benching won’t really affect the Redskins’ fantasy players too much. Beck and Grossman are equals in terms of expected production.
Unfortunately, the Raiders can’t say the same thing. With Jason Campbell likely done for the year after breaking his collarbone, the entire offense is in shambles. Kyle Boller is a third-string kind of talent that will now be starting — look for the Raiders to go really run-heavy. They may try to make a play for Carson Palmer or David Garrard.
In more quarterback news, Donovan McNabb was removed from the Vikings blowout loss early. This guy hasn’t been able to play at a reasonable level since his final year in Philadelphia. The possibly permanent move to Christian Ponder can only help Percy Harvin and Adrian Peterson.
OK, let’s get to some random thoughts after digesting Week 6:
* Chris Cooley shattered his finger and is going to be out for a significant time. Fred Davis is going to be a TE1 option going forward.
* Mike Sims-Walker was a surprise healthy scratch. He’s simply not good enough for the Rams right now, leaving Danario Alexander as a starter and upside play going forward.
* This Pierre Garcon/Curtis Painter connection is no joke. The Colts have turned Garcon into their No. 1 receiver, drawing up bubble screens and quick hitters for him instead of Reggie Wayne. I’d rather have Garcon than Wayne right now.
* The 49ers continue to monitor Frank Gore’s workload closely. He is shuffling with Kendall Hunter in the middle of series. Selling here isn’t a bad option.
* Rashard Mendenhall is back. That’s two straight good performances by the Steelers’ offensive line and now Mendy looks healthy. Saddle up for a nice streak here.
* Peyton Hillis was dealing with a hamstring injury and is headed for an MRI. Without his massive workloads, he’s fantasy dust. Hillis is a shell of the breakout player he was last year.
* I’m impressed by Darrius Heyward-Bey. He’s running crisp routes, using his hands to catch passes. Actually getting open. The problem now is his quarterback situation.
* Jimmy Graham and Marques Colston are just dominating in New Orleans. It leaves no room for anyone else, like Lance Moore or Robert Meachem.
* Felix Jones with what is believed to be a high-ankle sprain. Yikes. He could miss a month or more, leaving DeMarco Murray as the Cowboys’ starter.
* Chad Ochocinco played nine snaps today. Drop him. Meanwhile, Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski are both TE1s in fantasy as the No. 2/3 options in New England’s passing game.
