Hope was a word that was seldom used around the New York Islanders.

The past three decades saw the Islanders’ reputation battered and beaten down from proud franchise to laughing stock. That’s what a rash of poor decision-making and poor decision-makers will do.

But as the 2010s wrap up, things are suddenly looking all the way up for the Islanders, who survived a decade that saw their very existence fall under siege.

Arena problems resulted in whispers of relocation to Kansas City or Quebec before the Islanders were lifted from their sagging home at the Nassau Coliseum to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

The marriage was anything but fruitful as the team — which struggled to stay relevant in the Eastern Conference for much of the decade — saw the NHL franchise and the Barclays Center back out of their deal, once again prompting talks of leaving New York altogether.

How long ago those talks seem now after the bid for Belmont was won. With a temporary stay at the “Old Barn,” a new arena secured, and proper leadership in place, the Islanders have become a force to be reckoned with.

While all eyes are locked on brighter times in the ’20s, we at Metro took a look back at the decade that was in an attempt to create an All-Decade Team for the Islanders.
