Boston entering final leg

The injury-plagued, excitement-challenged 2010 Red Sox season is almost at an end.

Boston, which has the day off today, returns to Fenway Park tomorrow for the start of a six-game homestand against Toronto and Baltimore.

They’re at Yankee Stadium next weekend, then visit Chicago for four games against the White Sox.

The one and only? October series is a three-game home set against the Yankees. Boston was 6.5 games out of the wild card chase yesterday.

Chasing the pennant

THE DEAL:
Of baseball’s six divisions, three are first-place blowouts and three are tight races. Here’s our picks to win the AL East, NL East and NL West.

AL EAST:
Sorry, Sox fans. With the Red Sox seven games back yesterday afternoon, this is a two-horse race. The Yankees entered their grudge match at Tampa Bay last night up by 0.5 games over the Rays, and their experience will make the difference. Pick: Yanks by two.

NL EAST:

The Braves lost to Washington yesterday, falling 2.5 games behind the first-place Phillies. Atlanta’s woeful road record (31-41) will doom them in the end. Pick: Phils by four

NL WEST:

The Padres continued their late-season slide yesterday, dropping a 9-6 decision at Colorado to slip to just one game clear of San Francisco. This one goes down to the wire, and San Diego will fade. Pick: Giants by one
