When Isaiah Thomas wiggles one up and in off the backboard at TD Garden, Celtics public address announcer Eddie Palladino will scream out, “I.T.!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
It’s a lot like he used to do when Kevin Garnett would drain a jumper: “K.G.!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
“I.T.” is a fine nickname for Thomas, but it’s just too easy … How about “Mighty Mouse?” Nah, it’s been done before and it’s dated as all hell. How about, “King of the Fourth?” Yup, it’s true but it doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue.
This week, we might have finally gotten this thing right. Metro sports columnist and Boston sports radio/podcast star Danny Picard wrote in his column last week that Thomas should be called “The Reason,” as in – he’s the reason Al Horford is here, he’s the reason Gordon Hayward is here, and he’s the main reason the Celtics are in the prime position they are today.
“All of a sudden, Boston has the look and feel of a ‘destination’ city in the NBA for players who have the right to choose,” Picard wrote. “But let’s be honest. Horford and Hayward wouldn’t be Celtics if it wasn’t for Thomas.
“He’s the reason. Not the Answer. Not the Truth. Not the Process. The Reason.”
Picard has been touting the nickname for Thomas all week on his podcast and on WEEI, and the Celtics superstar took notice on Wednesday.
