Bowl-bound Eagles opt for coach stability

Five straight victories and yet another bowl bid earned Boston College football coach Frank Spaziani another two years at the helm.

Five straight victories and yet another bowl bid earned Boston College football coach Frank Spaziani another two years at the helm.

BC AD Gene DeFilippo announced yesterday that Spaziani’s contract has been extended through the 2015 season.

“Frank Spaziani has done a terrific job in his first two seasons as our head football coach,” DeFilippo said in a statement. “There is no doubt in my mind that he has our program headed in the right direction.”

Now it is, at least.

In October, the Eagles were 2-5 and in very real danger of missing the postseason entirely.
That was before they strung together a five-game winning streak (beating Clemson, Wake Forest, Duke, Virginia and Syracuse) and earned a berth to the Fight Hunger Bowl.

In just his second year at the helm, Spaziani has become an established presence in the topsy-turvy coaching world of the ACC. The league’s coach of the year, Ralph Friedgen of Maryland, was abruptly fired yesterday.

“I am very appreciative of this contract extension,” Spaziani said. “As I have said in the past, I am honored to be the head football coach at Boston College; there’s no other place I would rather be. I look forward to leading this program into the future.”
