Derek Jeter has split up with actress Minka Kelly. After three years, countless wedding rumors and plenty of surprising public appearances — like on the field after the Yankees won the 2009 World Series — they’ve gone their separate ways.
These are obviously two people that will land on their feet. Perhaps Jeter wins another World Series. Maybe Kelly’s new show, “Charlie’s Angels,” will be a hit? So, you won’t hear a faint violin playing here.
The real question is: Who will the next female be that Jeter adds to his résumé? There’s no need to run through the A-list talent Jeter has dated over the past decade. Will he dip into the music genre? Does he go back to an actress? Maybe Jeter goes the Hunter Pence route and starts dating a Playboy model? (just go Google “Shannon James” and you can thank us later).
Clearly, this will be a massive postseason subplot for the Yankees.
The old snake in the helmet trick, huh?!
Your wacky, reptile story of the day: A high school football player in Arkansas picked up his helmet and put it on. While wearing it during practice, he felt something odd inside, but thought it was just his wet hair flopping around. During a break in the action he took off his helmet and saw what appeared to be a little snake.
Thinking it was a prank — the old rubber snake in the helmet trick, huh?! — he grabbed it by the tail and it moved. Then he panicked and dropped the snake, which reportedly measured 10 to 12 inches in length, and one of his teammates killed it.
The approximate time the young man was practicing with a snake in his helmet: 15 minutes.
Jimmer free to break the honor code
One of the most popular college basketball players ever, Jimmer Fredette, got engaged over the weekend. The 22-year-old Fredette was a lottery pick of the Sacramento Kings in June, and is slated to make a couple million a year on his rookie contract, whenever the lockout ends.
As soon as Fredette announced the engagement to BYU cheerleader Whitney Wonacott — on Twitter — the jokes were that he finally wanted to have sex.
Fredette went to BYU where there’s a strict honor code. One of his teammates, Brandon Davies, was booted from the team for allegedly having sex with his girlfriend. Enjoy Sacramento!
