‘Bruising,’ ‘swelling’ for Pierce, but he can play fine

The All-Star break can’t come soon enough for the Celtics.

The All-Star break can’t come soon enough for the Celtics.

Already knee deep in injuries, the C’s got some more concerning news regarding the health of their captain, Paul Pierce.

Pierce missed yesterday’s practice and will skip today’s workout with minor injuries to his left foot and right hand.

While he should be able to play through the injuries, it will take a little time for Pierce to get back where he was.

“I think there is some bruising obviously; swelling,” coach Doc Rivers said. “But everything he can play with. It’s one of those things where someone hits you with a baseball bat on your arm. It’s going to take time to heal. He got kicked a couple games ago in his foot, and then he got hit on the hand in the same way in the same game, and they both are reacting.”

The coaches voted Pierce into this year’s All-Star game. He’s also scheduled to defend his 3-point shooting crown.

Don’t expect to see Pierce truly risk making the injuries worse in those events.

“I know the coach of the All-Star Game, so he probably won't play a lot in that game,” joked Rivers, who will coach the Eastern Conference All-Stars.

Injury woes at center

The C’s thought they addressed their issues at center by signing Shaquille O’Neal, Jermaine O’Neal and Semih Erden in the offseason.

Not quite. Jermaine O’Neal is rehabbing from knee surgery, and Shaq is still dealing with a right achilles injury.

“Shaq honestly is just not healing right now,” coach Doc Rivers said. “We’re hoping after the break at some point, obviously.”
