Charcandrick West could be key addition to Jets
Charcandrick West is a New York Jet, the team making a move on Sunday to bring in the running back to help bolster the depth at the position.
The running game struggled in Friday night’s 22-16 preseason loss to the New York Giants, with Isaiah Crowell failing to make a dent in limited touches and Bilal Powell generating just 24 yards on 10 carries. West brings something a little different to the running backs room, a powerful back with some good wiggle and a low center of gravity.
The need for West arose as the Jets are likely without Elijah McGuire to start the year, the running back currently sidelined with a foot injury.
West, in his fourth season in the league, has averaged 3.8 yards per carry in his three previous seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs. He has amassed 999 rushing yards in his career.
“He was a guy that has some time in this league,” Jets head coach Todd Bowles said. “He has return ability, and with Eli being down, we have a chance to look at some other runners and make sure we don’t miss anything so we are doing due diligence on him. We are going to give him a look this week.”
The Jets also cut Lucky Whitehead this weekend and added quarterback John Wolford.
An undrafted rookie free agent, Wolford is now part of a very crowded quarterback room in Florham Park. Bowles wouldn’t commit to Wolford playing on Thursday night in the preseason finale against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Last year at Wake Forest, Wolford threw for 3,192 yards and 29 touchdowns against six interceptions as a senior.
“We were thinking about practice squad,” Bowles said. “We wanted to see if he can learn the system a little bit, so we brought in a guy a week early because we had an extra spot to use.”
