David Ortiz suspended four games for role in brawl

National League ballparks aren’t the only thing that can keep David Ortiz out of the lineup.

Major League Baseball discipline can apparently do it, too.

Ortiz has been suspended four games for his role in a series of July 8 brawls with the Baltimore Orioles, MLB announced yesterday. Orioles reliever Kevin Gregg was also banned four games. Both players have been fined an undisclosed amount.

Mike Gonzalez was suspended three games for throwing at Ortiz later. Orioles manager Buck Showalter got one game.

Ortiz’ ban will begin tomorrow night at Tampa Bay, unless he appeals.
