Donald Trump for President: Why is he getting even more birther-y?

His bizarre appearance on "Today" makes us wonder: Could Trump actually believe what he's saying?

How birther-y is Donald Trump getting? A lot birther-y! The NBC reality star went on NBC morning show "Today" after an NBC/WSJ poll showed him tied for second as a possible Republican nominee for President. This led to lots of talk about Trump's totally legitimate presidential ambitions and his utterly sincere belief that Barack Obama was not born in the USA. (None of this was challenged by "Today" host Meredith Viera because, hey, she's got cover letters to write.)

Ever since Trump started with the birther talk, Metro has been wondering: Why spout off ridiculous falsehoods to appease a fringe element of the Republican base if you're not actually running for President? But then we thought of something even worse. Could it be that Trump actually believes this stuff?

(Or is that a sign of cynicism that that wasn't our initial thought?)
